Spanish Fork Police Department

Traffic School

In 1995, the Spanish Fork Police Department established a traffic school. The Department began offering a traffic school for persons cited for moving violations. In an attempt to educate drivers and reduce the number of accidents in Spanish Fork.

Attendance to our traffic school will allow licensed drivers an opportunity to improve their knowledge of traffic law and keep a clean driving record. Upon completion of the class, the citation will be dismissed and will not appear on your driving record with the Drivers License Division.

To qualify for traffic school, you must meet the following criteria:

  • No prior moving citation according to Spanish Fork Police records within the past year.
  • You must not have completed Spanish Fork City's Traffic School within the past year.
  • You must have a valid drivers license at the time of the citation.

The citation may not be incident to an alcohol violation, (including DUI ), reckless driving, or evading a peace officer.

Citations which involve an accident will be handled on a case by case basis under the direction of the Spanish Fork Police Department supervision or the City Prosecutor's office.

There are two options for traffic school. A Live Traffic School and an Online Traffic School. You may choose to attend either course.

When you have completed either the Live Course or the Online Course the City Attorney will make a motion to dismiss the citation and no points will be shown on your permanent driving record. If you fail to attend or pass the class a notice will be sent out to you from the court for a formal sentencing on the citation. This happens because you have not complied with the terms of the plea in abeyance.

If you choose not to attend one of the two schools offered, you are still responsible for the citation which may include court appearances and possible fines.

Option One - Live Traffic School:

  • You must appear at the Fourth District Court, Spanish Fork Department, located at 40 South Main in the time frame as specified on the citation.
  • You must enter into a plea in abeyance with the court and pay the abeyance fee of $30.00 or as otherwise outlined by the court.
  • You must sign up to take traffic school by bringing a copy of the abeyance form to the Spanish Fork Police Department located at 775 North Main and pay a fee of $60.00. You may pay with a check or cash only. No call in registration will be accepted.
  • Classes are held on Wednesday nights at 7:00pm. The class lasts approximately one and a half hours (1 ½). Your attendance and participation is required (no test). You can register for a class which is convenient for you. Please arrive on time.

Option Two - On-line Traffic School:

  • This option is for those who have a difficult time attending the live course.
  • This on-line traffic school option is completed in its entirety on-line from your own computer, including the plea in abeyance, payments, course instruction and testing.
  • Drivers at the time of their citation are given detailed instructions on taking this course including the web site and password to register and start the course.
  • After taking this course the student is instructed on the steps needed to confirm their completion of the course.
  • There is an additional fee of $20 to take the on-line traffic school option.

Important Information

Periodically, a person will come into the police division on the 15th day or later and request that we work with them and allow them to sign up for the class. If you are in this situation, please read the following carefully:

The reason that we can offer traffic school is because the City prosecutors office allows us to do this. They have agreed not to prosecute the citation of a person that has attended traffic school. We therefore hold the citation for (14) fourteen days to allow a cited person the opportunity to sign up for traffic school. During those (14) fourteen days, the police division, in effect, controls the destiny of the citation. If a person signs up for traffic school, their citation is placed in a folder for that particular class. If the person then attends the class, their citation is destroyed.

If, however, the person fails to show up for the class, for any reason, then the next day, the citation is sent to court for prosecution. Once the ticket is out of the control of the police division, we can no longer control its destiny. The court is now in control of the citation, and they control its destiny. The same is true for those who come in on the (15th) fifteenth day or later. Their citation is no longer in the control of the police division. The citation has been sent to the court, and they now control its destiny.

We can not, nor do we ask for the court to return a citation to the police division so that the person can avoid prosecution. It would be inappropriate for us to do this. The judge has advised us that once he receives the citation, it would not be returned to us. We therefore honor his order and do not make inappropriate requests.

Remember, once the citation is out of our control we can not control its destiny. Even if we allowed you to attend traffic school, we would have no way to destroy the citation. Therefore please honor the time limit established and enroll for the traffic school within the (14) fourteen day limit.

The Spanish Fork School is administered by the Spanish Fork City Police Department. The court is not involved in any way with the administration of this program. If you have questions, comments, or concerns about this program, please do not contact the court. You may call or come in person, to Police Department and speak with the traffic school administrator. The telephone number for the department is (801) 798-5070.
