Spanish Fork, UT — Two occupants walked away from an emergency landing of a Piper Saratoga which experienced engine failure while on approach to land at the Spanish Fork Airport.
Spanish Fork Fire & EMS was dispatched at 2:30 p.m. to the 500 W area of 1000 N where the plane came to rest in the front yard of a nearby residence. Both of the male occupants of the plane were able to get themselves out before crews arrived.
The cause of the engine failure is unknown, but the pilot heard the engine sputter before it failed completely. He made a mayday call and tried to make it back to the Spanish Fork Airport but didn’t have the speed or altitude to do so. In order to avoid hitting a power substation, I-15, or nearby structures, the pilot attempted a landing in an open field.
The plane skidded through the field after clipping a power line, and finally came to rest across the street from the field in a neighbor’s front yard.
Spanish Fork Fire & EMS was assisted by Central Utah 911, Spanish Fork Police, and SESD.
The plane is likely a total loss with damages estimated at $350,000.
